A bolt is a metallic diplomat: it passes through two pieces of wood to negotiate peace, then invites a washer as a shock absorber. The nut comes to give it a hug by turning clockwise. The more they love each other, the more they crush everything. Sentimental fixation guaranteed. The bolt, ordinary in appearance, was summoned to assembly without knowing why. A hole was drilled in it, forced into it. A bureaucratic washer verified its existence. The nut, obsessed with tightening, began to turn, again and again. No one remembers what it was supposed to fix, but we continue to tighten it out of habit.
