10. How cookies are managed

1. Cookies used

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file saved on your computer's hard disk at the request of the server managing the visited website. It contains information on the navigation carried out on the pages of the site. The aim is to make it easier for the same person to use the site again and to navigate in an optimal way.

In concrete terms, how do cookies work?

On your computer, it is the browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.) that manages the cookies. It is the browser that receives the order to save them from the server (the cookie principle is part of the HTTP protocol used for exchanges on the Web). It is the one that records them and it is also the one that allows them to be controlled, according to the wishes of the Internet user. It is possible to prevent cookies from being saved at all (but this will prevent access to many sites, or at least the use of their functions). Browsers allow you to find them, list them and even delete them. Even if you don't delete them, they will disappear because they have an expiry date, which can be several months or the "end of session", i.e. the moment you leave the site you were visiting.

2. Browser settings

You can allow or refuse the storage of cookies on your terminal with the appropriate settings in your browser. Here is how to set up the acceptance of cookies with the most commonly used browsers:

- For Internet ExplorerTM: http://windows.microsoft.com/fr-FR/windows-vista/Block-or-allow-cookies

- For SafariTM: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph21411?locale=fr_CA
